Ashley Judd’s husband was Dario Franchitti. The 49 year old Brit, who is of Italian heritage, made a name for himself as a racing driver before taking up a role as a motorsport commentator.
Franchitti, who served as co-commentator for Formula E’s world feed broadcast after his retirement from racing, is famous for being a four-time IndyCar Series champion and three-time Indianapolis 500 winner. He also won the 24 Hours of Daytona race.
Having grown an interest in karting as a schoolboy, Dario participated in the Karting Scottish Junior Championship in 1984 and won the tournament. He went on to win the British Junior Championships in 1985 and 1986 and the Scottish senior title in 1988. Dario enjoyed a stellar youth career, winning championships at various levels. In 1992, he was named McLaren/Autosport Young Driver of the year.
He went on to drive for AMG Racing in the German Touring Car Championship and the International Touring Car Championship, as well as serve as a test driver for McLaren. In 1997, he joined Hogan Racing and made his US debut in the CART Championship Series. By 2003, he joined the Andretti Green team that was moving to the IndyCar Series, where he enjoyed a stellar career.
In between his IndyCar Series racing career, Ashley Judd’s ex-husband was known to combine Sports Car racing. He also once unsuccessfully tried his hand at NASCAR in 2008. He retired from motor racing in November 2013 on medical advice after he was involved in a serious car crash.

In December 1999, as Ashley Judd was receiving rave reviews for her performance in Double Jeopardy (1999), it was announced that she had gotten engaged to Dario Franchitti, who himself had finished runner-up in the 1999 CART season. The duo had met earlier that year when they were set up by friends at a wedding reception. They remained engaged for exactly two years before exchanging vows in December 2001.
Their wedding ceremony was held at Skibo Castle near Dornoch, Scotland. Marino Franchitti, Dario’s brother, who is also a race car driver, was the best man while country singer Wynonna Judd, Ashley’s half-sister, was the maid of honor.

They issued a statement to the press before taking to Twitter to reaffirm their unending love for each other despite the end of their union. Ashley tweeted, “Family forever. @dariofranchitti.” and her ex-husband responded by saying, “@ashleyjudd family forever.”
It is not clear what caused the end of their marriage, but the couple did not have any kids together as Judd is famously an antinatalist. Her ex-husband has since gone ahead to remarry and has welcomed two daughters.

Martin attended the University of Zurich and the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore before he was awarded a Ph.D. in 2011 by the Max Planck Institute of Evolutionary Anthropology.
Ever since Judd’s marriage to Dario came to an end in 2013, she had maintained a low profile in regards to her love life until 2021 when she was linked to Surbeck. It is said that both parties had intended to keep their relationship a secret, but word about it eventually made it to the public.
